Hung Gar Kung Fu is a southern China branch of martial arts based in the Guangdong Province. Hung Gar is one of the 5-family systems of kung fu that originated from the Shaolin Temple during the Ching Dynasty. Gar or jia is the Chinese word for family. Kung fu or gung fu is any skill accomplished through time and effort.
Sifu Yung (Weng; or affectionately called Master Bill by his students) teaches both the external and the internal (wai jia and nei jia) aspects of Hung Gar. This is to combine the principle of hard and soft from the 12 words or 12 bridge hands. Please refer to the KUNG FU/TAI CHI section at right.
The emphasis at the beginning for Hung Gar is physical health while building confidence through practical applications. At the advanced level, the emphasis switches to cultivation of internal Chi Kung energy. Although the emphasis is different at various levels, the highest level of wu chi state is always implied through the complementary forces of yin and yang. In addition, students also learn the classical southern style of Chinese lion dance. Please refer to EXTRAS section at right.
The students have performed the lion dance and Hung Gar kung fu demonstration in many celebrations throughout the year in the greater Atlanta areas. The kung fu demos have included empty hands and weapons sets. According to Asian tradition, the lion represents courage, energy and wisdom.
